The drivers was download from here =1019&menustate=0First installed the VxD drivers, compatibilty was fine (except for win native games that doesn't play cd tracks), but there some really old DOS games that got a very poor performance, like Another World, the three Alone In The Dark (AITD3 is fully unplayable) or DOSQuakeThe fact is i got FM Chip installed, so i can play any game with SoundBlaster sound (Duke3d, Doom, Wolf3d, Heretic, etc.)
Later i installed WDM drivers, there is no much change really, just the poor performance is gone, the three AITD is fully playableAll DOS games are playable with cd tracks with no issues, the win native games too (aoe2, quake 2)The only i cant get working is the FM Chip, because its not installed, so all the games with SB sound are playable without music (Wolf3d only with pc speaker)

Electronic Speech Systems (ESS) started in 1989, and are most famous for their AudioDrive chips, used in many sound cards. Most AudioDrive chips are Sound Blaster Pro-compatible. All cards post-ES688 got the very good sounding integrated FM synthesizer circuits called "ESFM". These were OPL3-compatible but developed in-house, with has 20 voices, 72 operators, and operated in two modes: Native and Legacy. In Native mode, ESFM allows more than six 4-operator FM voices to be mapped, potentially allowing for a significant increase in the complexity of tones generated. The drivers for Windows 9x incorporate their own custom instrument patches which make use of this extended mode. Conversely, Legacy mode provides full backward-compatibility with Yamaha's YMF262. ESFM's output in this mode is moderately faithful to the YMF262 overall, but some tones are rendered quite differently, resulting in unique distortions in the sound and music of some games. Many DOS gamers prefer the softer sound of the ESFM over Yamaha's original OPL3 output.
This card provides good sound in Windows, but the DOS drivers only allow for Sound Blaster Pro compatibility (8-bit stereo) and it has a lower sound quality than a real Sound Blaster Pro or the Pro Audio Spectrum.

On a side note: my ESS Maestro-2M is integrated on my motherboard. I managed to get it to work in DOS/Windows 3.11 as a full Sound Blaster Pro 2.0 compatible (installing the SBPro 2.0 drivers in Win 3.11 works and it thinks its a proper SBPro). Every game I've tried with it so far has worked flawlessly with no TSR loaded (even Duke 2 plays PCM). However, sound is distorted because it's being pumped out too loud. The SBPro 2.0 mixer works for PCM but not FM. PCM can be tamed but shutting off the FM completely is a goal of mine.

2 Driver support can be found at HP's site. But for the life of me haven't figured out the Audio Driver download. Its a DOS Exe file and when I ran it, it's just an Info screen advising you to 'run Setup.exe'. SO I went with the generic Win98 driver install which seems to work, mostly.

A bit older message, but thought to still ask: I have Toshiba Portege 3110CT with ESS Maesto-2E (ES1978), running FreeDOS 1.1, found some drivers for the audio card, like a mixture of DOS and Windows drivers (originally for Windows). You mentioned that you looked some forums where people actually did get it to work. Any recollection what forums ?
This sounds like a good option. I'm not familiar with the YMF7xx chips. Are they in some sound cards along side the OPL3, or do they replace the OPL? On Frequency Monster's site, I only see the requirement that it's an OPL3 compatible card and they list the SB16 and SBPro in their compatibility table. I'm not sure what's in the computer I have in mind for this. I think it's a Soundblaster 16 but I'm not sure yet. Also, is FM801 multitimbral? It looks like you may be limited to bitimbrality but it's not clear to me.
The YMF72X line are an all in one PCI interface, PCM, XG Midi and legacy OPL3 core on the same die. There was an earlier YMF 719 ISA chip that was just FM like a SB card. I think Yamaha wanted to move into the motherboard sound market. (some Laptops have the YMF chips, and I have a Sony Viao desk top with a YMF 719 on Mobo) but with the 724 they were too late; the market was moving away from Midi and FM sound to wave/soundfont, so driver support for FM stops at XP (and getting the OPL support in XP is not plug'n'play; the generic driver doesn't support it directly). Yes it looks like FreqMonster 801 does indeed support SB 16 ISA cards! Cool; This is new to me, I've only played with it on XP with a YMF 724 card, will have to try it with a SB16 As to computer: Win98 or XP >200-300MHz, IIRC. There may be issues with an OPL ISA card & XP but GiveIO may do the trick.
